Curriculum at Macaw Kindergarten

The Macaw New Gen approach emphasizes curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning. We embrace a philosophy of education that combines a nurturing, inclusive learning environment with an increasingly challenging academic program that addresses the developmental needs of each child.

Our curriculum is time-tested, unique to Macaw New Gen, and crafted by our own Curriculum Expert. This customized curriculum is theme-based, and draws from multiple early childhood models, particularly Reggio Emilia. We believe this blend offers children the well-rounded experiences and skill set needed for their future academic success. Well-organized classrooms within our Nursery and Early Childhood programs are divided into interest areas, and children have a multitude of materials available to them for various types of play. Each day is intended to be joyful and full of discovery. Teachers lead children through a variety of experiences and learning opportunities that balances academics and meaningful play.

WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PLAY

Play is fun, but it is also how young children learn. Through play, they learn conflict resolution, respect, creativity, independence, and self-confidence. Rather than just passive learning, play encourages children to actively engage in their world and become mini “scientists”—exploring, manipulating, and interacting with their environment. Play allows them to investigate, create, and discover; it motivates them to take risks; and it adds to their understanding of the world.

AN ACADEMIC FOCUS

As children move up to our Junior Pre-K and Pre-Kindergarten programs, our curriculum is both academically challenging and developmentally appropriate for the age and maturity of each child. Through discovery and exploration, our children learn that acquiring knowledge can be both challenging and fun. Children are encouraged to take intellectual risks: to ask questions, venture answers, express their imaginations, and try things out in an accepting environment.  Areas of academic importance include: early learning skills in math, language, art and science.

DEVELOPING THE WHOLE CHILD

Along with our focus on the social and emotional well-being of children, our goal is to ensure their academic preparedness by instilling a deep love of learning and nurturing a broad set of skills and knowledge. At Macaw New Gen, a love of learning, the development of skills, and the pursuit of academic excellence are deeply connected to love of school and joy of collaborative exploration. Classrooms at all age levels are structured to include opportunities for observation, exploration, risk taking, experimentation and problem-solving. We believe these are the key elements for a child’s successful development. Our curriculum also includes many opportunities for teachers to assess the individual needs of every child. We strongly believe that academic preparedness is unique for each individual child and it is our responsibility to know them intimately as a learner.

Macaw has carefully designed topics, themes, and challenges on which we can then stream the children’s learning. Our topics focus on a wide range of different aspects of the different subjects. We also place a strong emphasis on teaching our children essential ‘Learn to Learn’ skills that will equip them to be learners for life. These attributes are taught explicitly but are embedded in all that we do. We focus on five key areas so that our children become :

  • Independent enquirers
  • Reflective learners
  • Effective participators
  • Team workers
  • Self-managers

We teach the children through the ten areas of learning and development. These are grouped into two categories – prime areas and specific areas. The prime areas are important because they the foundations for children’s success in all other areas of learning and of life :

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

The specific areas provide the range of experiences and opportunities for children to broaden their knowledge and skills :

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Our teachers know how to engender both enthusiasm and respect for learning in children. We also know that it’s equally important that our teachers, like parents, are models for children in every circumstance. The following are some of our social modeling philosophies :

  • Children who see their teachers treating them or their classmates with understanding and respect when they make mistakes are more likely to be tolerant of the mistakes of others and more willing to take risks themselves.
  • Children also learn that it is acceptable to make mistakes when they see their teachers make mistakes without losing their composure.
  • When children watch teachers cooperate with each other in running the classroom, they learn valuable lessons about the benefits of teamwork.
  • When teachers help children settle conflicts that arise on the playground or in the classroom, children pick up strategies for conflict resolution that they themselves can later apply.
  • Our students learn from teachers that their ideas are respected and valued when the teachers encourage them to make choices for themselves.
  • Enthusiasm is contagious: teachers who exhibit enthusiasm for the subject matter of their lessons are more likely to have enthusiastic students.
  • The traditions practiced in our school community also serve as an integral part of our social curriculum.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

Our classrooms are merely a stepping-stone into the world around us. Outdoor play is vital for young children, and we spend a significant amount of time outside at Macaw New Gen. Many of the developmental tasks that children must achieve—exploring, risk-taking, fine and gross motor development and the absorption of vast amounts of basic knowledge—can be most effectively learned through outdoor play.

School Traditions

The time-honored traditions that we practice at Macaw New Gen nurture a child’s sense of self and social responsibility.

We believe the fundamental values of respect and compassion start at the earliest ages and are learned through modeling and practicing small, regular customs.

Our entire community of students, parents, teachers, and staff celebrate Macaw New Gen traditions — we look forward to them, enjoy being a part of them, and take pride in watching children become accustomed to these social experiences.

KINDERGARTEN BUDDIES

Our Kindergarten students partner with a Preschooler (2-3 year olds) each school year. As the “big kids” on campus, Kindergartners begin to realize they are role models for our younger students. The buddies meet once per month for various fun activities, from reading together to special art projects. You’ll be amazed at how grown-up Kindergartners can be when given a little person to help.

“THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER”

The whole school gathers everyday to sing the prayer by both the children and staff.

SCHOOL EVENTS

Macaw New Gen conducts numerous events These special events add to the social atmosphere of our school and bring parents together to celebrate the success of our individual and collective efforts.

Our Programs

The first years of a child’s education can set the course of his or her life. That’s why it is vital to rouse their curiosity and provide a rich environment for learning and growth. Our programs incorporate dynamic classroom instruction with caring, qualified teachers and enriching indoor and outdoor play experiences. We know that these first experiences within a school setting will have a long lasting impact on their future academic success.

Each of our programs provide a strong curriculum and dedicated teachers, who are trained and skilled to meet the specific needs of the age group they care for. The overall experience at Macaw New Gen Preschool promotes a love of school while nurturing social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. We invite you to visit our school and see for yourself the exceptional learning that takes place.

Our Toddler program encourages children to use their bodies, senses and their emerging problem-solving skills to learn about and make sense of their world in the ways most meaningful for them. We balance individual attention with group experiences and ensure that your toddler is using all that energy in productive ways.  Each day is filled with fun activities that excite and develop toddlers, giving them the comfort and confidence to speak those first few important words, as well as make their first friends.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS :

The journey from Preschool to Kindergarten at Macaw New Gen is a cohesive progression. Ideas and skills build, year upon year. We craft a curriculum specifically for each stage of development, so every year brings new challenges and new adventures.

Nursery Program

Preschool is the beginning. It’s a rare opportunity to start off just right.

Our Nursery  program starts with two-and-half -year old, it is where friendships begin to develop and children gain confidence as they use their words and thoughts to interact with others. We allow children to express themselves creatively and encourage all children to develop their unique skills and interests. Preschool is a hands-on, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate program for young children. We strive not simply to shape young minds, but to inspire them. We aim to spark fascination that lasts into Kindergarten and long beyond.

As two-and-half-year-olds learn best by doing, Preschool children have innumerable opportunities to explore, try new things, and grow. Children are encouraged to interact and role-play in both a dramatic play area and outside; construct structures with blocks; build with a variety of manipulative materials; use mixed media such as paints, clay, and sculpture materials; investigate science through exploration; and begin to appreciate literature through listening to stories. These, as well as many other play-based activities, promote positive social, emotional, and academic growth. Our balanced approach in the classroom engages young minds with a blend of music, art and movement, as well as the early education fundamentals they will need as they continue on to Junior KG.

Junior KG

As they enter our Junior KG program at three-and-half-years old, your child’s world opens up in new ways. At this age children improve coordination, learn more complex games, begin to interact more deeply with others, and become more curious. It is this natural sense of curiosity that we use to inspire them to learn and grow.

Our Junior KG program is designed to enhance a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development. This environment allows children to develop skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics.

Senior KG

Our Senior KG introduces children to a more formal education in a safe, comfortable environment.

Throughout the year, we provide a comprehensive, learning-centered approach that challenges children and supports all areas of development.

Summer Camp

Macaw new gen Summer Camp, Our program thrives with a high camper return rate year after year. With each new summer, elementary school aged children can choose from a variety of exciting, educational and challenging activities.

We know that your child is unique, and we believe their summer camp experience should be too.
